How to fold an origami budgie
Fold a kite in half and reverse-fold the tip forward so the pale inside shows as the face. Snip the chest round, then glue the bird onto a little brown twig.
You need: 1 square sheet, green on one side (yellow or white on the back), a small brown strip for the twig, scissors and glue. Medium, 11 steps, about 10 minutes.
Steps
- Crease the diagonal. White side up, turned like a diamond. Fold the left corner to the right corner, crease and unfold.
- Make a kite. Fold the two lower edges in to lie along the centre crease.
- Turn it over. Flip the kite over, so it is all green.
- Fold in half. Fold the left half behind the right half along the centre crease. The long fold on the left is the budgie's front.
- Face down. Outside-reverse-fold the top 4 cm forward and down, wrapping it round the body on a crease slanting up to the back. The pale inside is the face.
- Round it off. Snip the corner on the back off, so the shoulders are round. Snip the forehead and the chin corners off a little, through all the layers.
- Tip it forward. Tip the budgie forward a little, head up and tail pointing down.
- Twig: a brown strip. Set the budgie aside. Take a brown strip 2 cm wide and 15 cm long, white side up.
- Twig: in half. Fold the strip in half lengthwise, top edge down to the bottom edge.
- Twig: snip the ends. Snip both ends off on a slant, like a broken twig.
- Perch it. Glue the budgie behind the twig, so the twig crosses it a little below the middle and the tail hangs down behind.

Draw an eye, a little hooked beak and dark throat spots on the pale face. Draw rows of scallops on the wing, tail lines and toes gripping the twig.
