How to fold an origami cardinal
Fold a red square into a bird base and fold the long point up as the neck. Fold its tip forward for the head, then back up as a pointed crest.
You need: 1 square sheet, 15 × 15 cm, red on one side, and a black pen. Easy, 8 steps, about 5 minutes.
Steps
- Crease the middle. White side up, like a diamond. Fold the top corner down to the bottom one and open it again, for a crease across the middle.
- Long point. Fold the two right-hand edges in to lie along the crease. The red flaps make the right end a long point.
- Fold in half. Fold the top half down onto the bottom half along the crease, flaps inside. The long fold on top is the bird's back.
- Neck up. Fold the long point up on a slant, creasing from 11.5 cm along the bottom edge to 6.5 cm along the back, both from the tip.
- Head. Fold the tip of the neck forward and down, about 4 cm from the end.
- Crest and beak. Fold the tip back up, about 2 cm from the end, so it sticks up and back as a pointed crest. The fold in front is the beak.
- Round the tummy. Fold the low corner of the body behind on a slant, so the tummy is round.
- Sit it up. Tilt the bird back a little so the tail slopes down behind it.
Cheer, cheer!
Colour a small black mask round the base of the beak, leaving a white dot for the eye.
