How to fold an origami hatching chick
Fold a yellow square into a round chick with little flipped-out wings, then fold a blue triangle into a cracked shell with three jagged points and pop the chick in.
You need: 1 yellow square (13 cm) and 1 pale blue square (15 cm), both white on the back, glue and a black pen. Medium, 11 steps, about 10 minutes.
Steps
- Chick: head and bottom. Take the yellow square, yellow side up, turned like a diamond. Fold the top corner behind about 2.5 cm, and the bottom corner behind a lot.
- Chick: sides behind. Fold the left and right corners behind, about 3 cm each.
- Chick: wings out. Behind, fold the tip of each side flap back out on a slant from the bottom of its fold, so it pokes out as a little wing.
- Chick: round head. Fold the corners at the top of the head behind a little, so the head is round.
- Shell: new sheet. Set the chick aside. Take the blue square, white side up, turned like a diamond.
- Shell: fold a triangle. Fold the bottom corner up to the top corner.
- Shell: top behind. Fold the top corner behind, about 5 cm down.
- Shell: middle point. Behind, fold the tip of that corner back up so a small point pokes out over the top edge.
- Shell: side points. Fold each side corner up on a slant so it sticks up past the top, like a broken bit of shell.
- Shell: round the bottom. Fold the two bottom corners behind on slants, so the shell is round underneath like an egg.
- Pop the chick in. Glue the chick behind the shell so its head and wings poke out over the top.
Peep peep!
Draw two shiny eyes and a little beak on the chick, and a zigzag crack on the shell.
