How to fold an origami cowboy hat
A crown with a dent cut into its top sits behind a long folded brim whose ends sweep up like a smile. Colour a dark band round the crown.
You need: A 7.5 cm and a 20 cm square, brown on one side, scissors, a glue stick and a black pen. Medium, 11 steps, about 10 minutes.
Steps
- Crown: fold in half. Start with the small square, brown side up. Fold the left edge over to the right edge.
- Crown: open it again. Open it back out, so there's a crease down the middle.
- Crown: snip the top. Snip down the middle crease from the top edge, about a sixth of the way.
- Crown: make the dent. Fold the two corners beside the snip behind on a slant, so the top dips in the middle.
- Crown: round the top. Fold the two outer top corners behind a little, so the crown looks soft.
- Brim: new sheet. Set the crown aside. Take the big square, white side up.
- Brim: fold in half. Fold the bottom edge up to the top edge.
- Brim: in half again. Fold the bottom edge up to the top again.
- Brim: and once more. Fold the bottom edge up to the top one more time, making a long strip.
- Brim: sweep up the ends. Fold each end up on a long, low slant that starts a little way out from the middle, so the brim curves up like a smile.
- Glue on the crown. Glue the crown behind the middle of the brim, so the dented top stands up above it.
Yee-haw!
