How to fold an origami viking helmet
A grey dome with a folded-up band, and two cream horns, each a folded strip cut to a point and bent up, tucked behind the sides.
You need: A 15 cm grey square and two 13 cm cream squares, all white on the back, scissors and a glue stick. Medium, 17 steps, about 12 minutes.
Steps
- Helmet: bottom behind. Start with the grey square, coloured side up. Fold the bottom third behind.
- Helmet: corners behind. Fold both top corners behind on a slant, about a third of the way along each edge.
- Helmet: round the top. Fold the four little new corners behind too, so the helmet is round.
- Helmet: fold up a band. Fold the doubled bottom edge up in front, about a finger wide, to make a band around the helmet.
- Left horn: new sheet. Set the helmet aside. Take a cream square, white side up.
- Left horn: fold in half. Fold the bottom edge up to the top edge.
- Left horn: in half again. Fold the bottom edge up to the top again, making a strip.
- Left horn: cut a point. Cut a gentle curve from the top left corner to the bottom right corner, through all layers, so the strip tapers to a point.
- Left horn: bend it up. Fold the thin half up on a slanted crease, so the horn bends up like a hook.
- Left horn: turn it over. Flip the horn over so it points to the left.
- Right horn: new sheet. Set the left horn aside. Take the other cream square, white side up.
- Right horn: fold in half. Fold the bottom edge up to the top edge.
- Right horn: in half again. Fold the bottom edge up to the top again, making a strip.
- Right horn: cut a point. Cut a gentle curve from the top left corner to the bottom right corner, through all layers, so the strip tapers to a point.
- Right horn: bend it up. Fold the thin half up on a slanted crease, so the horn bends up like a hook.
- Right horn: tilt it. Turn the horn a little so its tip points higher.
- Glue it together. Glue the helmet over the wide end of the right horn, and the left horn behind its left side, both tips curling up.
Skål!
Draw a row of rivets along the band and a ridge up the middle. Now you're ready to sail!
