How to fold an origami iris
Fold two purple kites with their back flaps pulled out: one stands up as the top petals, one hangs upside down as the drooping ones. Add a stem and a sword leaf.
You need: Two purple squares (12 and 14 cm), a 13 cm green square, a green 3 × 22 cm strip, glue and a white pen. Medium, 12 steps, about 15 minutes.
Steps
- Top petals: kite. Purple side up, like a diamond. Fold the top edges behind to the middle line, and the bottom point behind, level with the side corners.
- Top petals: pull out. Behind, fold each flap back out from its side corner, so a petal points up and out on each side. Three petals up!
- Bottom petals: new sheet. Set it aside. Take the bigger purple square, purple side up, like a diamond.
- Bottom petals: kite. Fold the top edges behind to the middle line, like before.
- Bottom petals: pull out. Behind, fold each flap back out from its side corner, a bit further this time, so the side petals are wide.
- Leaf: new sheet. Set it aside. Take the green square, green side up, like a diamond.
- Leaf: top edges. Fold the two top edges behind to the middle line.
- Leaf: bottom edges. Fold the two bottom edges behind to the middle line too. A long pointed sword leaf.
- Stem: new sheet. Set it aside. Take the green strip, white side up, long edges at the sides.
- Stem: edges to the middle. Fold both long edges in to meet in the middle.
- Stem: and again. Fold the new long edges in to the middle again. A thin green stem.
- Glue the iris together. Glue the top petals on the stem, then the bottom petals upside down over them so their sides droop. Glue the leaf behind the stem.
Iris!
Draw a white streak down each drooping petal, and a line up the middle of the leaf.
