How to fold an origami paper lantern
Fold a red square into a round lantern body and a gold strip with a pointed tassel end. Glue the body over the strip so gold peeks out at the top and bottom.
You need: A 13.5 cm square, red on one side, a 10.5 × 15 cm piece of gold paper and a glue stick. Medium, 6 steps, about 8 minutes.
Steps
- Body: top and bottom. Red side up. Fold the top edge and the bottom edge behind, a sixth of the square each.
- Body: round the corners. Fold all four corners behind on a slant to make a round, wide lantern.
- Gold strip: new sheet. Set the body aside. Take the gold paper, white side up, standing tall.
- Gold strip: edges in. Fold the long edges in to meet in the middle.
- Gold strip: the tassel. Fold the bottom corners behind on a long slant, so the lower end narrows to a tassel.
- Glue the body on. Glue the red body over the gold strip, leaving a gold band showing above it and below it, with the tassel hanging down.

Draw curved ribs down the red body and fringe lines on the tassel. Hang a row of them for a festival party.
