How to fold an origami pill bug
Fold the sides of a grey square behind so it tapers, round the ends, then pleat it four times for the overlapping plates. A folded strip makes the feelers.
You need: 1 grey square, a thin dark strip about 1 × 10 cm, glue and a black pen. Medium, 15 steps, about 12 minutes.
Steps
- Sides behind. Start grey side up. Fold the left and right sides behind on slanted lines, so the body is a bit narrower at the bottom.
- Round the ends. Fold all four corners behind, about 1.5 cm, so the head and the tail are round.
- Plate 1: fold up. Fold the tail end up, on a line about 3 cm above the bottom.
- Plate 1: fold back. Fold it back down on a line just above. It leaves a ledge, like one of the bug's plates.
- Plate 2: fold up. Fold the whole lower part up again, on a line about 2.5 cm higher.
- Plate 2: fold back. Fold it back down on a line just above. It leaves a ledge, like one of the bug's plates.
- Plate 3: fold up. Fold the whole lower part up again, on a line about 2.5 cm higher.
- Plate 3: fold back. Fold it back down on a line just above. It leaves a ledge, like one of the bug's plates.
- Plate 4: fold up. Fold the whole lower part up again, on a line about 2.5 cm higher.
- Plate 4: fold back. Fold it back down on a line just above. It leaves a ledge, like one of the bug's plates.
- Feelers: dark strip. Set the bug aside. Take the dark strip, lying across.
- Feelers: fold in half. Fold it in half the long way, so it's thin.
- Feelers: bend. Fold the left half down on a slanted crease through the middle, so the two feelers make a V.
- Feelers: turn. Turn the V so it opens upwards.
- Glue on the feelers. Glue the point of the V behind the head, so the two feelers spread out in front.
Roll up, roll out!
Draw two little eyes on the head and a row of tiny legs peeping out along each side.
