How to fold an origami staircase
Narrow a long strip by folding its edges to the middle, then turn it up and across on slanted folds, again and again, until it climbs like a staircase.
You need: 1 long strip of paper, about 3 × 21 cm, coloured on one side. Easy, 7 steps, about 5 minutes.
Steps
- Narrow the strip. Lay the strip white side up, long side across. Fold both long edges in to meet along the middle.
- Step 1: up. Leave a square's length at the left end as the floor. Fold the rest of the strip up on a slant, so it points straight up.
- Step 1: across. One square up, fold the rest to the right on a slant, so it lies flat: a step to stand on.
- Step 2: up. One square further on, fold the rest up on a slant again: the next riser.
- Step 2: across. One square up, fold the rest to the right on a slant, so it lies flat: a step to stand on.
- Step 3: up. One square further on, fold the rest up on a slant again: the next riser.
- Step 3: across. One square up, fold the rest to the right on a slant, so it lies flat: a step to stand on.
Up we go!
Stand it against a box for a dollhouse, or walk two fingers up and down the steps.
