How to fold an origami starfish
Fold a half sheet into a slim point of five layers, make one long cut and round the tip, then open it out: a sea star with five fat arms. Dot it all over for its bumpy skin.
You need: 1 square sheet (15 cm), orange on one side, scissors, a ruler, a black pen and a white gel pen. Medium, 10 steps, about 10 minutes.
Steps
- Fold in half. Fold the top edge down to the bottom edge. The middle of the top fold is the centre of your star.
- Fold the left side over. Fold from the centre down to a point on the bottom edge 2.4 cm left of its middle, bringing the left part over to the right.
- Fold the right side over. Fold the right part over along the edge of the flap you just made, so it lies on top.
- Fold the point in half. Fold the left half of the point over onto the right half, lining up the edges. It is now a slim point of many layers.
- Cut the arms. Cut from the left edge 7.3 cm down from the point, across to the right edge 3.6 cm down. Then round off the tip with three small snips.
- Unfold. Unfold the last fold.
- Unfold again. Unfold the right part.
- And again. Unfold the left part.
- Open it flat. Unfold the top half. Five fat arms!
- Turn it upright. Turn the star so one arm points straight up.
A sea star!
Dot white bumps along every arm, then give it two eyes and a big smile in the middle. Pinch the creases so the arms rise a little.
