How to fold an origami sun hat
A long folded strip with its corners tucked makes the wide oval brim, a rounded crown sits behind it, and a pink ribbon goes round the crown.
You need: A 21 cm square and a 10 cm square of straw-yellow paper, a 10 cm pink square, all white on the back, a glue stick and a white pen. Medium, 11 steps, about 12 minutes.
Steps
- Crown: corners behind. Start with the small yellow square, coloured side up. Fold both top corners behind on a slant.
- Crown: round the top. Fold the four little new corners behind too, so the crown is a round dome.
- Ribbon: new sheet. Set the crown aside. Take the pink square, white side up.
- Ribbon: fold in half. Fold the bottom edge up to the top edge.
- Ribbon: in half again. Fold the bottom edge up to the top again.
- Ribbon: thin strip. Fold the bottom edge up to the top one more time, making a thin ribbon.
- Brim: new sheet. Set the ribbon aside. Take the big yellow square, white side up.
- Brim: fold in half. Fold the bottom edge up to the top edge.
- Brim: in half again. Fold the bottom edge up to the top again, making a long wide strip.
- Brim: make it oval. Fold all four corners behind on a long, low slant, so the brim looks like a wide oval.
- Glue it together. Glue the crown behind the middle of the brim, so its dome rises above. Glue the ribbon across the crown, just above the brim.
Sunny day!
Draw a white flower on the ribbon. Fold a little one for a doll, or a big one for a summer party sign.
